SIDE IMPACT TEST WITHOUT OPTIONAL SIDE AIRBAGS

OVERALL EVALUATION: Poor
Injury measures Head protection Structure/safety cage
Head/neck Torso Pelvis/leg
Driver Poor Acceptable Good Poor Acceptable
Rear passenger Acceptable Good Good Poor

Important: Side impact crash test ratings can be compared across vehicle type and weight categories.
Test details:

The Toyota Prius was redesigned for the 2004 model year. Beginning with 2007 models, side airbags were made standard.

Two tests of a 2006 Prius were conducted, one with optional side airbags for the driver and rear passenger, and one without. These vehicles are rated separately, except that the structural ratings for both vehicles are based on both tests.
Injury measures:

Driver — Measures taken from the dummy indicate that serious skull fracture and/or brain injuries would be likely in a crash of this severity, and rib fractures would be possible.

Rear passenger — Measures taken from the dummy indicate that serious neck injuries would be possible in a crash of this severity. The risk of significant injuries to other body regions is low.
Head protection:

Driver — The dummy's head was hit by the intruding barrier, producing high head injury measures.

Rear passenger — The dummy's head was hit by the intruding barrier, as well as the window sill and window frame of the rear passenger door, producing high neck injury measures.

  • They need to rephrase this and say "death is possible".

  • I still wouldnt buy one. I dont like the way they look, or drive. So I went with The Ford Fusion Hybrid instead.

  • it got good with side airbags

  • even with air bag the test is poor.

  • Not safe without the side bag. Check out the IIHS Prius side test WITH the bag. That one did well. Side bags were standard starting in 07.

  • The Prius has much better warranty and long term reliability records than anything from VW even the diesel Jetta. The statistics are resounding. Prius wins.

  • They weren't standard until 2007 because before that not enough customers saw these videos and knew they should want them. Toyota and all car makers could save $500 per vehicle not having side bags and keep the price lower for customers who didn't know better.

  • IIHS can't set lower standards for cars without airbags. If they did, what would be the incentive to make them standard? We'd just have more Pontiac Trans Sport death machines on the road.
