Oh yeah, show me where he has "disavowed" Rand's philosophy? Neil is a VERY rational, and reasonable person, and Rand's philosophy is based rationality and reason. Not only have I never have seen a statement from Neil explaining the "fallacies" of Ayn Rands philosophy, To the contrary I have seen proof he hasnt abandoned that way of thinking, in the works of things like, Cut to the chase, The larger bowl, grand designs, One little victory. All of these songs have strong individualist messages.
The whole Rand thing was blown out of proportion at the time, it was something he read and then moved on from as he has done over the years. Neil wrote The Trees having on the basis of a cartoon he saw and stated that there was no particular message, however he is again quoted as saying that if you wish some meaning then it is a parable about collectivism.
The meaning is actually very simple. We are not all equal in every way. Any attempt to artifically create universal equality is ultimately doomed to failure. The part about the trees being called equal by hatchet, ax, and saw is about cutting someone down who is superior to others in an attempt to level the playing field. Completely ridiculous in my mind where we should be elevating others not attempting to hold down the strong
