That's a very bad design on GM's behalf. Drain the oil right onto the exhaust pipe. They should have put the drain plug going out the side or straight down like most other cars.

Also, depending on your hand strength, you may not want to use a tool to tighten the new oil filter. I have never used anything other than my hands to install new oil filters --- hundreds installed and zero leaks! If you can get close to 3/4 turn after the gasket ring just makes contact with the sealing surface on the engine, you will be fine. After you start the engine to get oil into the filter, take a look under the vehicle to make sure no oil is leaking. Top off and go.

I just got one of these, Great to see it first before I do it. Glad to see you using Mobil 1, also.

Very helpful. I am a female learner trying do things on my own and this gave a very through explanation. Thank you.

Missing the information to reset the Oil Change Light. Do you know to do?
Thanks.

@akortscheff If you press the button it should come up with a menu option to reset the oil change mileage. The owners manual would also cover this if you have it. Hope this helps you out.

i noticed you didn't put a deflector out the back of the skidplate so the oil doesn't drain onto the skidplate. i could see the oil dripping out the front holes of the skidplate. out service manager gets mad at us if we don't either take the skid plate off or put a deflector on there, he hates comebacks for oil leaks, and all it is, is the oil laying on the skid plate.
