Mulkey Ranch in Texas

The Mulkey Ranch is a premier hunting ranch in north Texas! With breathtaking views and outstanding native wildlife, this ranch is unique find!

Water/Rivers:
The Mulkey Ranch sits on the south side of the Prairie Dog Fork of the Red River, which forms the Texas-Oklahoma border in this area of the state. The ranch has approximately five miles of frontage on this river.

The Red flows water year around and is a natural attraction to the areas wildlife. It has formed a large bluff on the Mulkey over time. This bluff provides beautiful views of the surrounding landscape and offers several wonderful locations to build a house or other hunting lodges.

There are approximately seven water tanks throughout the ranch, some of which are springfed. In addition to these water tanks, the ranch has several water wells dotted in its pastures. These wells are run by different means, such as windmills and electric/solar-powered pumps.


Wildlife/Game:
The whitetail deer on this ranch are truly phenomenal! For the last eight years, the current owner has only taken does and cull bucks to purify the gene pool. No trophy bucks have been taken off of the ranch. The deer population have been supplemented with corn, on top of the winter wheat that has been sewn for them. With plenty of water, food, and no hunting pressure, the Mulkey bucks have grown to be enormous! 170-180 pt. B & C class deer can be found on the ranch; wide, tall racks are consistent, and 150 class deer are plentiful.

In addition to big-bodied deer, the Mulkey is loaded with Rio Grande turkey. It is common to see 50-100 turkeys running across the grass covered hills. In the springtime, when the turkeys come to their roosts off of the central pasture from the river, they travel in groups as large as 500. It is really a site to behold!

The ranchs open pastures and plum thicket groves are great for quail, and bobwhite are abundant here as well. The natural springs scattered throughout provide a good water source for the birds. There is also great dove hunting along the river, which acts as a flyway for migrating birds.

The Mulkey is home to other native wildlife too, such as bobcat, mountain lion, coyote, armadillo, and wild hog. Geese can be found grazing on the wheat fields.


Vegetation:
This ranch is one of the few in the area with native pecan trees. These tall pecans can be found mostly in the central/east part of the ranch, in the heart of the property. They are mixed in with other hardwoods, such as elms, willow, hackberry, and a few tall cedars, creating somewhat of a forest. In addition to the acstetic beauty of these trees, they also provide excellent bow hunting Other predominate trees on the ranch are cottonwood and chit wood.

The west side of the ranch has a mesquite pasture that separates the river bottom from a winter wheat field. These mesquites create excellent cover for deer as they come up from the river in the afternoon to graze on the wheat. A person could set up deer stands virtually anywhere around the wheat fields and take their pick!

A few parts of the Mulkey have CRP grass pastures, which largely consist of bluestem, switch, sage, yucca, and plum thickets. The pastures roll with hills and are outlined by tall tree groves.


Improvements:
A short distance down the main entrances road is a nice 3BD/2BTH hunting cabin. This cabin has been completely refurbished, from the inside out, in order to make it as maintenance-free as possible. The whole house has newly tiled floors. A metal roof was recently added, as well as CH/A. A wood-burning stove in the living room creates a cozy atmosphere at night. There is also a utility room with W/D connections.

Other improvements to the ranch include a set of corrals, metal barn, good fencing throughout (perimeter & cross), several feeders, deer stands, utility meters, water wells, and public road frontage.


Location:
In Northwest Texas in Hardeman County, approximately nine miles north of the town of Chillicothe. The Mulkey is in the rolling plains of Texas, in a transitional area from the Texas Hill Country to the West Texas Plateaus and Panhandle. The ranch is tucked away in the corner of the county and is very private. Little to no through traffic passes by its gates, with the exception of the local farmers and ranchers.

The closest major city is Wichita Falls, TX (pop. 107,000), which is about 75 miles away. Distances to other major cities are as follows:

Abilene: 165 miles
Oklahoma City: 165 miles
Amarillo: 170 miles
Lubbock: 185 miles
Dallas/Fort Worth: 215 miles
Houston: 450 miles

The closest public airports are the Quanah Airport, approximately ten miles southwest of the ranch, and the Wilbarger County Airport, about twenty miles southeast. Private jets and planes are welcome at both of these airports.

I hunted this very ranch as a child all the way through my teen years and let me tell you it is loaded with Turkeys and Quail.You can drive buy on the south side of the ranch close to dark and be blown away by the sheer numbers of whitetail deer grazing in the fields.
