Actually, the climbing spikes probably wont reach the cambium layer on a tree that big beacuse the bark is so thick. But I agree, climbing spikes are bad for trees. I am an arborist and
I would never use spikes unless im felling a tree.

@goedgedacht He looks like he's wearing climbing spikes. It's a shame really because they actually do a fair bit of damage to a tree. You can't see the damage but it does dig into the cambium layer. Most trees cope with it but it's not a good practice unless the tree is being felled.
