In 1964 Frankie left Columbis Records
and made one of the biggest mistakes of his life. He signed with Capitol Records. They didn't seem to know what to do with him and was more interest in this new singing group they just signed from Liverpool England.
Here are the first two recording from the Capitol years. "Halfway" and the flip side "Go On With Your Dancing"

  • There were several reasons why he was displeased with the way he was treated there.

one he didn't get along with the A&R chief

at Capitol. They did not see eye and eye on what songs he should sing.

A friend of his brought him a new song from

a Broadway show that he had wrote and wanted

Frankie to record it. The A&R man said no, he had a better one "Heartacks Can Be Fun" the song he didn't like was "The Impossible Dream"

    from "Man Of La Mancha"

  • Nice. "Halfway" is a great find! ("Dancin'" is justifiably forgotten, in my opinion.)

It's true--Frankie was apparently peeved as hell about being denied "The Impossible Dream" for the rest of his career. And justifiably so--that one could have been as big for him as "You Gave Me a Mountain" turned out to be a few years ago.

  • He was peeved and left Capitol as soon as he could. But he didn't get along with the people at ABC much better. They didn't want him to do "You Gave Me A Mountain". They wanted him to do only songs like "I'll Take Care Of Your Cares" which was good for one song but not a steady diet. He had to finance

the making of "Mountain" himself. He left ABC

with a sour note as well.

  • Laine rejuvenated his career at ABC records with a series of "easy listening" chart hits--and "Mountain" was a smash for him until Elvis expropriated it.

I don't think he could have been dissatisfied with his experience at ABC overall.

  • If you read his book he was not to pleased with the management at ABC. In fact he says that Larry Newman the president of ABC was one of the few people he detested.

  • Although Frankie may have been unhappy with his time at Capitol, he still put in some great performances - Halfway and A Girl were stella reneditions.

  • I remember Halfway and always liked it,but I've

never heard the B side before,it's what I'd call

soft Rock&Roll, doesn't quite work for me,Frankie

deserved better than this,I suppose that's why he didn't stay long with Capitol,,cheeers,,Mick...
