Google's previous attempts at social networking have been total failures. Google Buzz was dinged for invading privacy and nobody understood Google wave.

As Facebook has joined forces with Microsoft's Bing, Google is yet again trying to gain a foothold in the social networking world with Google+.

One of the biggest complaints about Facebook is the inability to separate your friends and acquaintances. What is suitable for your college buddies isn't always suitable for mom.

With Google+users sort their friends and acquaintances into different circles that are separated from each other to prevent awkward oversharing.

Perhaps to build buzz, membership in Google+ for now is by invitation only.
