sometimes "defensive passes" are the only way to play. sometimes teams play with all of there men behind the ball and the only way to make an attack (without playing a bolton style long ball) is to pass it around amoungst the back 4 and the defensive midfielder to draw men out to create space to get in behind. So the "defensive passes" may be part of the attack
