In response to suzettegm's interesting perception, I wonder if a word - akin to "mockery" but slightly different - might be better understood. What about "witty" - charmingly, sweetly witty - even mischievous at times. "Mockery" is accurate if one takes its second-use meaning: "playfully vexing". But most people think of what has become its first meaning: "ridiculing". At any rate, I understand what you mean, suzettegm, and totally agree! Thanks for your faithful listening to these postings.

I think that -- whatever we want to call it (is there an appropriate word in German?) -- is an aspect of much of Beethoven's keyboard work. Perhaps the best examples would be found in the Diabelli Variations. Like Shakespeare's plays, Beethoven's keyboard works seems to encompass every emotion possible.

It takes a great pianist to bring this out. I think too many pianists (I won't name names, but many in the "Beethoven Pantheon") miss this and play him too portentously.
