@modestforagenius But if it was in your home it would set fire to the ceiling, go out of control, and cause disaster.

Oil is less dense than water, putting water on the fire will just cause the oil to float and increase the intensity of the fire. Also oil is nonpolar, but water is highly polar, the two dont mix well together. It would be ideal to put out the fire using CO2, which is more dense than air and is nonpolar itself. Because of this it settles over the fire and prevents O2 from entering.
