Joe Ely does the Robert Earl Keen song. The Road Goes on Forever. There's a verse missing in the song. Not my fault. The verse goes like this.

Sonny was a loner older than the rest.
He was going in the Navy but he couldn't pass the test.
So he hung around town and sold a litte pot.
But the law got wind of Sonny and one day he got caught.
But he was back in business when they set he free again.
The road goes on forever and the party never ends!

  • Flew to Austin from Pa in September '09 and saw him at the Union Ballroom at UT. Walked over from the Tech game! What a night! He had his old band back together - McClarty, Grissom, Pettit. Who is the guitarist in this clip?

  • Thats Kenny Greenburg on guitar.

  • Might I suggest iTunes for really clean recordings.

  • Nice! When and where, jimmydacat?

  • I believe this was in Nashville circa 1995 or so.

  • @jimmydacat ha ha ha ha ha !!!

  • Saw him @ I-Fest in Houston, was a great show !

  • @ccoyle it is Vin Diesel.

  • Damn... That "brdwonder" guy was really pissed off about this video!

  • Fantastic! I love it. I'm a huge Bruce Springsteen fan and Joe Ely is like Springsteen's more folksy cousin. Love it.

  • @brdwonder

Um, Joe Ely would have been 12 years old when Buddy Holly died?

  • @brdwonder I hope you're just joking about remembering Joe in Buddy Holly's band. Joe would have been about 12 years old when Buddy died. I don't recall any 12 year olds in Buddy's band. Maybe you're thinking of Waylon Jennings, who was also from Lubbock, TX.

  • I like the Robert Earl Keen version. It has more passion and its a lot fun to dance to.

  • New Years in Ft Worth Texas with Darren Bunch's Crew and a closed party in the Worthington Hotel and Joe was it.
