Supplying water to residents is a big challenge in urban India especially in small towns such as Mulbagal with a population of 50,000. About 30 of the 74 bore-wells are not working and groundwater is the only source of water here. Institutionally and organisationally to there are challenges in terms of human resources. The poor also get left out of the system.
In this school rooftop rainwater harvesting is being tried out with the support of Arghyam- www.arghyam.org-. This will provide around 300,000 litres of water for the school children to wash their plates and for the school toilets. It will also provide the opportunity of teaching school children water literacy and the importance of sanitation and hygiene. In such ways the town seeks to build sustainability under the IUWM framework.
