That knife throwing sequence is a direct copy of a thing that happened on The Tonight Show way back in the early 60s.

Vizard copied The Letterman Show down to the studio set-up...even his music guy was called Paul. Vizard had its last show just before channel 9 started showing Letterman in a similar time slot. This is why the show ended.
