This video shows how to make the laser blaster sound from the Star Wars movies. Looking on the serious side though, its an excellent example of dispersion of waves in a medium. In the Slinky, higher frequencies travel faster than lower frequencies, which is what gives the sound you hear.

This is a two-part video - This first part deals with just the basics and aims to be a little more entertaining than serious, the second part contains some more in depth discussion for students with more of a background in physics.

  • Just hold the spring so it doesn't touch the ground. i.e high up then place a paper cup near the top and hit the spring on a coil about four above that.
