Leiden, Key to discovery
Leiden is a typical university city, hosting the oldest university in the Netherlands (1575). Leiden is also a typical student city and has a rich student life, including many cultural activities, sports and things to do. Many students are members of a student association. The students who live and study in Leiden give the city its relaxed yet vibrant atmosphere.

Life in Leiden is greatly influenced by the relatively large number of students, as most of them both live and study in the historic city of Leiden. The large numbers of young people who study here give the city its lively character. Given the city's safe environment and friendly atmosphere, students generally feel at home here very quickly. Studying is without doubt important, but life outside the lecture room is at least as important.

Out and about
All the student associations, most student houses and many university buildings are located close together in Leiden's historic city centre. Whenever you are in the city centre, walking or cycling along the city's canal-lined streets or in the busy shopping streets, you are sure to meet people you know. And it goes without saying that Leiden has numerous friendly cafs, reasonably priced restaurants and a wealth of art and culture.

Cultural activities
Art and culture are a major feature of Leiden and they help to make student life enjoyable. There is no other city in the Netherlands that has as many museums within walking distance of one another. The theatres and concert hall offer a varied programme of drama, music and dance.

Universities
Leiden is home to Leiden University and to a campus of Webster University. Leiden University is the oldest university in the Netherlands. It was founded in February 1575, as a gift from William of Orange to the citizens of Leiden after they had withstood a long siege by the Spanish. Webster University is the accredited American University in The Netherlands, offering Bachelor and Master programs. University of Applied Sciences Leiden (UAS Leiden) has approximately 8000 students and offers a wide range of study programmes in Education, Management and Business Studies, Technology, Health and Social Work.

City of Leiden
With 117,000 inhabitants, Leiden is a medium-sized city by Dutch standards. Leiden is close to Amsterdam, Rotterdam, The Hague and Utrecht, the four biggest cities in The Netherlands. Amsterdam airport and the beach are within easy reach.
