A great short video showing the history behind the Octopus at Detroit Red Wings games. It began in the 1950s. Presented by VS.

  • No helmets back in 1952.

  • stop saying octopi, so annoying.

  • so primitive.....

  • Why does everyone think you need to hide them or smuggle them in the rink? You walk into Joe Louis Arena with the octopus in a clear bag so security can see its not a bomb, and they let you in. Its that easy.

  • @THE1playmaker94 i guess you like to see the blood and guts of the octopuses. i haven't lived in michigan since 1981, and yet i still check out the redwings a bit.

  • @coventrygardens personally i dont think it would be as entertaining.

  • @THE1playmaker94 wouldn't it be just as entertaining to use phoney octupuses that could be thrown numerous times? how about phoney octupuses that look like the mascot??

  • @coventrygardens we use it for entertainment purposes, and thus, technically, its not a waste.

  • @BrenMcCloud thanks. given the fact that people can buy live fishes at various places, i thought maybe some people were using live octopuses. there likely is going to be someonewho decides to draw attention by using a live octopus. seems to me that they should use phoney octopuses, so they wouldn't cause a mess. furthermore, i imagine the octopuses don't get eaten after they are thrown on the ice, and thus it would be a waste.

  • @coventrygardens The octopi are long dead by the time they reach the arena. They sell them at fish markets. I get the feeling fans would get arrested for animal abuse rather than just thrown out if the octopi were alive.
