2007 Collective Improvisations Part 1/ Tom and Matt Smith

Tom and Matt Smith perform collective improvisations with trombone and drum set. Although Fulbright professor Tom Smith is known primarily as a mainstream trombonist, jazz big band leader, musicologist, conductor and facilitator of international performance scenes and the IAJE Jazz Ambasador recipient, he is a highly regarded free jazz trombonist, heavily inluenced in this genre by Albert Mangelsdorff and Ray Anderson. He performs this kind of music regularly in Eastern Europe with Eurojazz notables Mircea Tiberian, Vlaicu Golcea and Mihai Iordache. "There I get to be somebody else and that's so much fun," said Tom Smith. 17 year old Matt Smith is a former WFD Champion and Louie Bellson Comp finalist, but has always gravitated towards the freer sounds having recorded late Coltrane covers at the age of 14. "I know some people like to use more space when they play this style, for the time being I like the continuous motion sound," he said.
