Zac Sunderland still has a record, however, becoming the first person to sail solo around the world before turning eighteen.

@FoxifiedNutjob Left to you & your weak willed ilk, society would still be in the stone-age running from larger predetors & searching the ground for left over scraps to survive. I thank the Lord that your type remains on the sidelines to allow the courages & doers in the world advance civilization, the only thing better would be for you to keep your mouth shut & mind your own business. God Bless Zac & his supportive family.

These idiots are your typical status seeking fools and they are willing to pay for such notoriety with their children's lives. I am disappointed to see these fools have so many children...

@kellypack That would be awesome!

Most of the comments you see on youtube are put there because the poster can do so without anyone knowing who they are. I have seen comments like "The bitch deserved to die after the poor blowjob she gave me" on memorial videos put up by family members of teens killed in accidents. If you choose to do so, I hope you get more pleasure from it then you must from the rest of your life.

To call yourself a sailor because you served aboard an aircraft carrier is like calling yourself a pilot because you flew aboard a 747. Leave the comments about wether they are or are not capable to make the trip to those who have done so themselves. There may have been problems and considerations involved in the planning and execution of these trips that I am not aware of and all I could do on the subject would be guess and assume. I choose not to.

They rely on the fact that if they may someday be the ones in need of rescue and that this rescue will be done without consideration of cost or charge. About making the trip in the first place. These teens (Zac Sunderland, Abby Sunderland, Jessi Martin, Jessica Watson, Laura Dekker) have more sailing miles and experience than most people who call themselves sailors. A sail around the local lake does not qualify you to comment on blue water sailing, neither does serving aboard large ships.

Every civilized country which borders water has a Coast Guard. Your taxes pay this Coast Guard wether they are active or not. They conduct exercises to stay proficient in case they are needed. These exercises cost money as well. When they conduct actual rescues, they gain in knowledge and experience. The maritime law which requires ships to assist each other in times of emergency prohibit them from charging for their assistance.

Even with stops, there are streches of ocean to be crossed that require long periods out of range of normal rescue efforts. Now, about the rescue costs for Abby. The aircraft which was send to locate and make contact with her was sent without cost to the Austrailian government.. The company was asked and agreed to send it. The people on board the plane also were there by choice. The fishing vessel picked her up as required by maritime law. If they were in trouble, they would expect the same.
Shut your mouth lostindiancamp. he had to port to repair broken and faulty equipment. this kid has alot of skill and balls to do this. sleeping for 20 min intervals and being at sea with no port for thousands of miles is more than you could imagine!
