  • Years ago I had this clip on an old VHS tape that I somehow lost along the way. I have been searching You Tube and other websites ever since in hopes of finding an upload. It is unquestionably the finest performance of the song that Steve ever did and perfectly sums up all the postive aspects of his live shows. A thousand thank you's for finding and posting this clip. My long search is over.

  • You are welcome.glad to be of assistance !

  • This might be my favorite live performance I've ever seen on YouTube. I don't know how anybody could watch this and not smile.

  • I love this version of the song. Steve Goodman was a great songwriter and entertainer. I wish I was aware of him years ago. What a talented person he was.

  • What an entertainer!! He will never be duplicated. Great song and a greater loss.

  • @MrsLarnche This is little different than "The Rock Island Line". There is no *perfect* version, and in fact whenever I've done any singing I incorporate parts of all the versions (and, like this song, mesh up the divergent lyrics).

  • This is not a "version" of the song. This is the guy who wrote it. Coe, Nelson, Guthie, and the like are "versions" of this song. John Prine was co-writer, in this particular case. Steve has written a lot of songs on his own, his most famous probably being City of New Orleans.

Let's give credit where credit is due. And this young man deserves a lot of that. And yes, knowing that his time here was not long, especially at the time of this recording.

Thank you 1000Magicians ! Luv, Me.

  • What the hey!? I can't believe I never heard of this guy. He's hilarious and crazy talented. Thanks for the post, it made my day.

  • Gone too soon.

  • to @ojaioan, I don't feel that Steve's, David's or even John's version is the best. But, play them all one after the other and boy you certainly get a great insight into how the song was constructed and which version gave it it's fame of course it was David's. I bet Steve thanked him all the way to the bank, but, I do like Steve's version, he sure hams it up, which then emphasis his very own talent.

  • Thanks to John Prine (whom I only discovered in the last few years!) I have also discovered Steve Goodman. I am fortunate and have extended my stay for 44years. Steve was not able to do that, which then causes me to think of the young family he had to leave behind. What a talent. Thank you so much 1000Magicians, I see we have similar tastes. I am in the process of buying all that is available of Steve's and feel blessed that I am able to hear and see him today at the end of 2011.

  • The absolute best. What a talent. Just his smile makes me smile. And he was dying and knew it.
