While visiting in California on vacation, my friend John in Long Beach, who has a Ph.D in mechanical engineering, let me ride his tiny KX80 dirt bike which had a built 550cc KX500 engine in it making, oh, 70 hp. The bike is literally 70hp in a 15 hp bag, and it vibrates like an evil paint shaker from hell.

Hilarity and near death predictably ensued. Dunno why anyone would want such a ridiculous toy, but what the hell, life is short and interacting with this evil little beast could make it shorter!

Every twitch of the throttle spun the dinky rear tire meant for an 80cc bike, shot the front end skyward, the bike trying to swat the lunatic behind the bars (me) like a bug. It was actually hard to wheelie for any distance, as the bike is tiny and the hard hitting modded KX500 powerplant's powerband and onset of power is so ridiculously forceful.

Just starting the thing was an adventure, it's high compression 550cc coffee can sized piston threatening to kick back and break an ankle. No kidding, the owner actually did break an ankle trying to start it in tennis shoes. Note the full boot on the kickstarter side :)

The video features Chevelle's "Too Scared to Run" as background music. I think it goes well with the open class 2 stroke bark and the fear living within the helmet.

  • cr 500 would blow it

  • wow those little tires a top speed... be careful im pretty sure you might get speed wobbles

  • dear santa

  • I'm stunned that anyone would build a bike like that - and just flat out amazed that anyone is brave/stupid enough to ride it!!! You've got some cojones...

  • @TheImminator Its the place in the rev range where the engine delivers its peak power; "My car's power band is between 5500rpm and 7000rpm" just to pull a made up example out of my arse.

  • @TheImminator it's where the engine delivers most of its peak power. in layman's terms, when it feels like a turbo boost is kicking in, you've hit the sweet spot on your power band. (to put it simply.. its kinda complicated)

  • awsome now pu it in a pw 50 frame =p

  • a phd is a doctors degree you idiot its called a masters degree not a phd

  • first i was like "why did he have to put so much into kicking it over?" then i was like "why does the exhaust have the big curve at the beginning like the 250s?" then I read the description and was surprised that someone could put, nay, WOULD put a 500 motor in an 80 frame. Madness.
