South Korea's Defence Ministry released a video of South Korean special forces storming a hijacked freighter in the Arabian Sea during a rare raid on Somali pirates. All 21 crew members of the South Korean ship, the Samho Jewelry, were rescued during the operation off the coast of Africa, South Korea said. Eight pirates were killed and five were captured. Storming a ship held by pirates is rare and authorities tend to avoid it because of the risk of harming hostages, who are usually kept below decks out of sight.

  • @samcook321 what the fuck?

South Korea military force : 9th in the world

South Korea economy power : 13th in the world by GDP with over 1 trillion dollars

South Korea is only 2 advanced countries in Asia beside Japan (according to OECD)

South Korean can wipe out your dirty weak Somalia anytime anywhere.

  • I have a general rule of thumb never to mess with South Koreans. This explains why

  • @tttar I can't think of such incidents, which would be rare because only a tiny fraction commercial ships are armed, and IMO officially recommends against arming private ships. It cost about $10,000-20,000 more per trip around Gulf of Aden to arm a ship enough to deter determined pirates, but instead, ships can just go around pirate-infested Gulf of Aden and take a longer but safe Cape of Good Hope Route. And not many crews are willing to risk their lives to defend someone elses' cargo.

  • @bluemonolith88 Good point, I hadn't considered damage to the ship. If it's like that, they'd need some pretty sophisticated defenses. I was just thinking about shooting the boarding parties. Have there been incidents, then, of pirates threatening to fire on a ship like that unless they were allowed to board?

  • @tttar Money. Arming every ships that travel through Gulf of Aden cost money in training, insurance, potential loss of human lives, damage to the ship, etc. Besides, pirates usually aren't looking to kill people or sink a ship, but if a firefight were to ensue, pirates are far, far more likely to kill crews or damage the ship. For example, can you imagine a crew of an oil tanker in a firefight against pirates armed with RPGs that can blow a hole in a ship's hull? Think massive oil spill.

  • The ship had a giant sign Saying JEWELLERY on it lol

  • Why aren't the ships armed in the first place? A speedboat comes, they can do little but watch as the bastards climb up the ladder and take them over, and then special forces have to come in to rescue the hostages? It sounds pretty dumb, but maybe someone can enlighten me.

  • Very skilled. Good work!

  • Good going South Korea!!!

  • @TheYuusuf143 forget this guy they wouldn't do tht to North Koreans

  • @bodingoji yea cuz they are just pirates, too bad they scared of the North Koreans
