@varsityeagle89 Hi eagle, no, it's not necessary. But the foil protects the ground below from embers and stains, and, imo, reflects more heat upwards (i.e. it helps to save fuel).
@shifty212 : Just by putting a layer of tinfoil under the stove ;-) Mike Lummio from Bushcraftnorthwest who gave me the idea also straightened the metal wires inside the stove. I did not find this necessary for my purposes.
