We use the instructions from the Dangerous Book for Boys to create a 10 cell quarter-battery for my seven year old twins. I have seen where others have attempted this and noticed that the thing they are usually getting wrong is that the aluminium must NOT touch quarter that it is separated from by the electrolyte soaked paper. If it does, you have essentially shorted that cell.
( A cell consists of 1 peice of aluminum, 1 piece of electrolytic paper, and 1 quarter. )
The aluminium CAN touch the quarter just below it, but NOT the quarter above it. So, this means you have to be very careful when constructing the battery. Make sure the aluminium is a bit smaller than the size of a quarter and you should be safe.
