@beamofnight it is indeed a russell's lionfish. two things that distinguish them are: 1. the chin of the volitan has stripe markings, whereas the russell's has no markings; 2. the rear dorsal, caudal, and anal fins of the volitan has black spots, whereas, the russell's fins are spotless, hence the common name clearfin lionfish. occasionally, some russell's may have a few spots on those fins but only a few spots and not many.
I think that's a Russel's lion - they are lighter in color and have much smaller spikes above their eyes. A lot of stores don't distinguish the two though since they are so similar, and they often get mis-marketed.
@dodge250 i have a juvenile lionfish with some striped damsels which can easily be his meal. i've fed the lionfish goldfish twice as big as the damsels and he doesnt even try to eat them since i well feed him. i feed him 2 goldfish mid sice a day so he has no reason to hunt in the tank

@ceichas1 lionfish wont eat damsels as they have venomous spines.
