The Complete Billie Holiday on Columbia CD 2

Lyrics:

The snow is snowing
The wind is blowing
But I can weather the storm
Why do I care how much it may storm
I've got my love to keep me warm

I can't remember
A worse December
Just watch those icicles from
Why do I care if icicles form
I've got my love to keep me warm

Off with my overcoat
Off with gloves
I need no overcoat
I'm burning with love

My heart's on fire
The flame grows higher
So I will weather the storm
Why do I care how much it may storm
I've got my love to keep me warm

  • Classic holiday song, but I love winter weather!

  • Classic song, but I love winter weather!

  • My husband and I got married in the middle of a terrible, terrible blizzard in December, but the day was magical and cozy and full of love! This has become our theme song!!

  • It's not christmas until I hear this song.

It is a great line-up, one of the best bands she had backing her up.

Webster had recorded a few sides with Ellington around '35 or '36, but he didn't join Ellington's band full time until 1940,shortly before they moved from Columbia to Victor. His solo here is sublime, nearly as perfectly executed as Holiday's vocal. And I'm really enjoying Sampson's solo; it's not a technical tour de force, but it is quite expressive.

This is definately one of the best vocal performances.

  • And look at the band - Ben Webster from the Ellington band and Teddy Wilson from Goodman - creme de la creme

  • Recorded on January 12, 1937, and released as "Billie Holiday and Her Orchestra". The song is from the 20th Century-Fox musical, "On the Avenue", written by Irving Berlin.

    The personnel:

    Jonah Jones, trumpet

    Edgar Sampson, clarinet/alto sax

    Ben Webster, tenor sax

    Teddy Wilson, piano

    Allan Reuss, guitar

    John Kirby, bass

    Cozy Cole, drums

    A true jazz classic.
