@Nominay Star wars was a great concept, but I agree that the technology at the time would have never been able to succeed. Don't forget that Regan was the one that supported the mujadeen, as well as the Contras and the UNITA. In Nicargaua and Angola, both communist governments were replaced and the USSR wasted huge amounts of money on failed efforts their. Saying the war in Afganistan killed the USSR is giving RR credit for the stingers....
Reagan was just in politically at the right time. The Soviet economy was collapsing because it had run its course. Communism for that massive country was simply at the end of its lifespan. It was always going to happen. That Reagan was militarily maniacal had nothing to do with a strong national security. For Chrissakes, he wanted Star Wars! The budget for that would've sank us! It was not our M1 tanks that quickened the USSR's demise, it was their war with Afghanistan.
@Nominay What did he do? Lets see, build a 600 ship navy, activate 10 army divisions, design and construction of thousands of M1 tanks.... which led the USSR to try to compete with and ultimately, destroy their own economy and led to the downfall of the eastern bloc. Through bluffing, a military build up and yet kindness at the right time, he achieved a victory without a total war between 2 countries. Maybe he wasn't perfect, but that is still impressive.
@lionel21000 What exactly did Reagan do? Define "face" - what did he do, stare him down? No as I recall we dropped a bomb that killed a child of his and Ghaddafi didn't change his ways for years still. Reagan "faced" the USSR by giving speeches, but he befriended Gorbachev with talk of peace. Some bad ass he was huh?
The gentleman standing next to the bed is providing a wonderful public service. He invites Jackie to repose before her delivery, and by extension, beckons the American public toward a balance of rest and labor. He is handsome and polite, mildly suggesting that other members of the public and the military might even themselves have a chance to use the bed and the accompanying accomodations at some point in the future. He is a distinguished public servant.
@mjw9363 Oh, and while we are talking about the GOP, lets add that Clinton did nothing about the bombing of the Cole, Embassies in Kenya and Tanzinia, the Kobar towers, and the first trade center attack. Yes, so Bush had ONE attack and did something. Clinton had 5 and did NOTHING.
@mjw9363 Ha ha! Reagan didn't do anything? You mean the build up in the 80s of the army that cause the USSR to economically destroy itself to stay in competition? Are you really saying that Khadafi got fat under the man that used 6 F111s to destroy his power grid, bomb his house and kill his son? Obama a man of action? Ha ha ha ha ha
