  • John- Thank you for the video, I'm becoming quite a fan of your no-nonsense approach please keep these vids coming! How late in the season can we safely cut back hard to the trunk removing all green foliage? Whats a rough cut off date for that first severe pruning and reduction and when you do it do you also trim the roots just as hard or leave them be?

  • @severusjsnape Difficult question to answer specifically...you need to do it early enough that the foliage has time to harden off before winter. I suspect in my climate(zone 8) I could potentially go as late as early Aug. and I have done drastic work through the month of July. Typically I will work on the roots at the same time...when I do this I am thinking about trimming the roots enough to get them into a small pot in the future. Of course they will grow back some during the development.

  • Great video John. One question, with this clip and grow pruning do you allow the tree to flower at this stage .

  • @09flintstone I do not worry about flowers during the development stage. If flowers are a concern I would not prune after mid to late June.
