Remember that some diesels will end up either have the fuel clogged thus choking the motor, or like you said a dead battery. I really don't think that there was carbon buildup on that van because there is alot of equipment thus having the motor give out more power just to move it.

What a dumb comment. If the diesels never started, nobody would have them. The diesels are FAR more reliable than gas engines. And if you listen, you can hear the battery is dead. How do you expect an engine to start with a dead battery?

Ohh yeah, i have had to live trucks die on me. The worst part of it is would be when i have a 10pm news live and my truck is dead, call back to the station and no one is there. What am i to do? Call and wake up the news director while he is sleeping, that did not blow over very well.

Maybe not alternator, the van may have been gas-drowned. It happens when you push the gas pedal too much. When that happens,gas enters the moter therefore clogging the regular pattern, if that happens, the motor has got to be started before its done for.
