  • nice Wes!

  • Johnson is doing an octave for octave solo rendition of Wes Montgomery's take on a Lalo Schifrin theme song for Cool Hand Luke.

Well, to each his own, I guess. To me, "cleaner & more relaxed" doesn't make it superior. Quite the contrary -- what I love about the '84 ACL version is its fiery tone and almost-off-the-rails intensity. It's just incendiary. But I agree, if "cleaner & more relaxed" is your preference, then the '88 version takes that prize.

I will say the beginning of the '88 version floors me. That lush, chimey intro is amazing. The way he puts chords together is soooo creative & melodic.

  • @Ken5244 im not sure i agree with the cliffs of dover being the best version... The 88 ACL was so much better IMO... cleaner and more relaxed...

EJ is playing a Stevens Classic.

  • If you see a Viking resemblance, it's because he's of Norwegian descent. Check out his Norwegian nose. And he's got that Nordic cool......

  • looks like a Hagstrom Viking

He's 30 years old here (he was born in 1954 and this was filmed in 1984).

This was his first appearance on Austin City Limits. As for "what else he played that night," there were a lot of songs, including "Soulful Terrain," "Bristol Shore," "I'm Finding You," "Emerald Eyes," "Manhattan," a very early version of "Trademark," "Tribute to Jerry Reed," "Kathy's Song," the best version ever of "Cliffs of Dover," etc. I think rockully3 has posted all the songs from this show here on YT.
