Melanie Safka is one of a short list of criminally underplayed, under-appreciated folk singers to come out of the 60s. The quintessential peace loving hippie folksinger, Melanie, known widely by her first name, has played all over the globe from Woodstock to the Netherlands, spreading sweet melodies and love messages to a staunchly loyal fanbase. She received her greatest commercial success for Brand New Key, Lay Down (Candles in the Rain) and Look What They've Done to My Song, Ma. This track, The Good Book, is the first of hers I fell in love, and remains my most favorite. The lyrics are almost cartoonishly simple for 2008 airplay, but, to me, when I listen, I ache to live in the world she paints, where acceptance reigns supreme, love blankets everyone and loneliness is a forgotten concept. This makes me smile, and evokes a nostalgic sense of humanness and connection. It's a happy listen.
