During the last ten years Whooper Swans winter in our dune-reserve almost every winter. Normally they arrive during the first halve of November and stay until the end of March.
However, this year they did not seem to come, because we had a very mild start of our winter and so they decided to stay in their summer quarters in Scandinavia.
Then suddenly in the end of January we had a very cold period with frost and snow, and in no time the Swans arrived like they did all those years.
On the 14th of February I took my camera, and with temperatures dropping to minus 16 I tried my luck in the Dunes.
These pictures show some of my results on a beautiful early morning just after sunrise.
For me the Whooper Swan with its melodious call, is one of the most wonderful birds in winter, which remembers me of the high Arctic regions, from where it originates. During their migration Whoopers can reach altitudes up to 10000 meters and have been seen by pilots on trans-Atlantic flights between Europe and America.
