American students ranked 17th in reading, 23rd in science, and 31st in math among 33 countries surveyed in a 2009 international study* of young people's ability to use their knowledge and skills to meet real-life challenges.
When it comes to education, the U.S. is falling behind. U.S. teachers rated their students' knowledge of the world and communication skills quite low despite acknowledging that knowledge of other nations and cultures and international issues are critical for their students to be college and a career ready.
