This is giving me OB rotation PTSD. We had ONE male OB resident on my rotation at SF General Hospital back in the 90's when I was a med student. Ironically, he was kindof a dick.

Where are you getting these articles?? Certainly not from the planet Earth. The vast majority of studies show a solid majority of women (in some cases as much as 70-80%) preferring female OBs. And I suspect that the numbers are much higher than studies show, as many (older) women are simply accustomed to seeing male OBs. The statistics support this. Young women overwhelmingly prefer female OBs. And work is getting tougher for male OBs - fewer patients. Lower incomes.

@DrSandmann: Yet, that is your own personal opinion. From the articles I have read, most women (above 50%) don't really care if they have a female or male OBGYN, they for the most part just want a competent doctor.

Sorry pal, it’s not “sexist” or “ignorant” for a woman to not want to spread her legs in front of you and let you stick your fingers in her pussy simply because you’re wearing a white coat and chose to go into a field that requires you do it.
As a guy (and a physician), I wouldn’t want a female urologist handling my dick. But at very least, a female urologist sees both male and female, whereas you’ve elected to deal only with female repro organs. That’s just plain creepy, dude.
-
.....and the statistics unequivocally support what you say.

That’s because there weren’t nearly as many women in medicine back then, you fucking momo. Now that there are, OBGYN residents are now 75% women. OBGYN practices now advertise the fact that they are all-female because it is a desirable feature of an OBGYN practice.
The reality is that very few people want male OBGYNs around.

There is nothing more exciting than the rush to save a baby's life or not knowing who is coming in the door and in what condition. Also you develop strong, lasting relationships with your patients, and even multiple generations of patients. All this while also being able to work in the operating room as well. I used to work construction (manly, yes) and similarly I will always be working with my hands in Ob. My point: M or F, we are drs and will sacrifice for our patients and save lives

@Everyone As a male who just graduated medical school and is going into ObGyn, I figured I should give my 2 cents. After reading all these comments, I can agree with a few things. The attitudes on here are very consistent with the overall population. No matter where you go, there are ignorant and sexist people out there, as well as those who understand. I'm a single male and every girl I've dated has been very open to my profession. Most guys chose it for the adrenaline and excitement involved.

@GailVDV Doesn't this strike you as just a little sexist? Besides, it's faulty logic. I, as a man, don't talk to my urologist about penises because he's a man. I talk to him about such intimate issues because he's a DOCTOR. And if he were a she, I honestly couldn't give a hoot. Do you have any idea how desensitized to sexuality most doctors are, at least in a clinical setting? They really just don't care. And neither should you.
You'd rather spread for a veterinarian than a doctor who knows what he's doing?!?!

Oh I dunno, maybe some of them do it because it's like surgery but even bloodier when you deliver a baby? And it's a fight to bring a newborn to life? Not all male OB Gyns are pervs. Nothing very arousing about seeing a woman give birth. And even the yearly exams aren't a great sight to see, and it's not because they lack female attention, they're just typical males.. They just have more to comment about because they see a lot more female genitalia than most guys ever will.
