This is the first part of my TM MEU custom built Les Baer Monolith 1911 replica.
Potted history:
The real steel Les Baer Monolith is has a lengthened dust cover version of his standard Premier II 1911, adding additional weight up front helps over come muzzle flip when firing, this is where the barrel raises up upon discharging a round and causes fast follow up shots to be inaccurate. IPSC demands accuracy at all costs so Les came up with this.
Its a mean looking gun with its slab sided apperance and is the only long dust cover version of a 1911 made by any real steel manufacturer, as the Infinity and STI types use extended guide rods with reverse plugs and bull barrels not Browning's original design short gude rod and stopped plug, hence they are not true 1911s. Splitting hairs aside, this is a beautiful looking gun and has an awe about it all its own.
The project:
The frame is a standard TM MEU black frame with, as shown, a Night Warrior front dust cover added as the extension. I first drilled out both halves with a 1mm pin drill then glued in wire using supaglue. This was then filled and will be sanded down to a flush finish. The slide is a TM Hi-capa slide which has had the chin cuts filled in using pieces of 'plasti-card', drilled and glued into place with wire and MMD filler. Hopefully this will stand up to the stress of recoil as the dust cover does move quiet a bit when in use, even on an airsoft gun. The two parts when sanded down and finished will be sprayed black using a matt black car paint. Engraving will then be done and again a spray coat of black added to finish off. The slide top has been rounded off and the lines filled with MMD filler. Be careful when doing this as you can sand down to much and the front sight will have a gap beneath it when you are finished.
Stay tuned for the second half coming soon...
