@booksbenji Not only is it marines and thus, drill instructors, but until recruits earn the title of US Marine, they refer to drill instructors & everyone else as sir/ma'am. That & Payne is a major. Therefore, he's "Sir" regardless.

@supremethunderclap two things. one, he is playing the role of a major, as the title of the movie indicates... a major is referred to by lower ranks as "sir". but even if he wasnt an officer, recruits still refer to drill instructors as sir, although the "sir sandwich" isn't used
secondly, they are drill instructors, not drill sgts, the army has drill sgts not the marines. the campeign cover is worn by officers at boot camp as well as DIs, the gold braids on his cover are for the officer version
