Watch the hilarious comedy for which N S Krishnan and T A Mathuram were famous for, from the movie "Manonmani" produced in the year 1942. The song ooounnu oru varthai sollamma from the movie was a mega hit chart-buster in those days. Watch how sincerely all three act. There are only two comedians in the world who have statues built for them, one is Charlie Chaplain and the other is N. S. Krishnan. His comedies were not only hilarious, but, highly thought provoking. Kalaivanar as he was fondly known and probably one of the greatest comedians the world has ever seen died at the young age of 49. Widely praised for his philanthropic and charitable activities he along with Thiagaraja Bagavathar were falsely accused in the lakshmikanthan kolai vazhakku(murder case) and spent time in prison.

Lakshmikanthan was a publisher of a yellow journal and used to write scandalous articles about the rich and the famous. Someone who had a deep grudge against lakshmikanthan, wanted to take revenge against lakshmikanthan, waited patiently for the right opportunity and murdered him at a time when Lakshmikanthan had written scandalous articles about N S Krishnan and Thiagaraja Bhagavathar. The trial itself was a sham and an eyewash with the prosecution leading the witnesses. Anyone going through the details of the trial would say, that the only purpose of the hearing was to victimise both NSK and Thiagaraja Bagavathar. Both were convicted but later acquitted.

Indian legal history will record this case as one of the most tragic miscarriages of justice. There are many such cases of miscarriages of justice. Even Mellissai Mannar M S Viswanathan was in his younger days accused of stealing a diamond necklace from the house where he worked and kept in prison in Tanjore. The police beat MSV repeatedly asking him to tell the truth, three days later the real culprit was caught and MSV was released from prison. The only reason the police had suspected MSV was because, in his younger days, MSV could not speak convincingly. It was just providence that the real culprit was caught. Imagine if the real culprit had not been caught, MSV would have spent several years in prison and the history of the Indian Movie Industry would have been completely altered.

excerpts from "The Hindu"

"Manonmani" the mammoth Modern Theatres' production was made at an enormous cost for the day — Rs. 2,00,000, — by T. R. Sundaram, the Salem-based Indian movie mogul. It was he who introduced the novel idea of seeking public opinion on the choice of the female and male leads. He advertised in the press, asking moviegoers to suggest the names of artists for the lead roles, and the almost unanimous choice was the 'Dream Girl of Tamil Cinema' Rajakumari as Manonmani and the multi-talented star Chinnappa as the prince-hero. It is perhaps the only incident of its kind in the history of world cinema and certainly in Indian cinema.

the 'comedy track' was taken care of by the inimitable Krishnan-Mathuram
