Here is the stove I made for my shed. It is fan flued and has a heat exchanger ( 24 feet of 15mm copper tube) located in the vertical section of flue just before the fan. 2 kilowatts is extracted here and piped to a radiator. The remainder of flue is 2 inch aluminium. You may note the flue stays cool as little heat is wasted to outside unlike in a large diameter conventional flue. In the clip the flue is unfinished but now it is terminated right up to the main roof level so the smoke disperses well. The stove is lined all around with a fireclay mix to keep combustion temperature high . The fuel here is very poor stuff, some old leyllandi trees I cut down last year , but once the chamber is glowing almost anything will burn. Not sure how often the fan impeller will need de gunking, time will tell. This fan is a little noisy as its a 10 year old one from a scraped combi boiler and bearings are worn.

  • Outstanding system. Really, hats-off for to you for efficiently maximizing the combustion w/ flue blower and incorporating a water-system heat exchanger. I have a plain box-stove in my Bus camper I want to increase the efficiency of, perhaps with an air-tube fed by a computer fan running from the stove's vent-chute to just below the flue-pipe's throat. Got here while looking for ideas. Cheers.

  • @starmanskye Hi, thanks for the good comments. Those PC cooler fans are usefull. Ive made use of one in a parafin fuelled heater in my camper van. Adios.

  • With more chimney pipe the less need for the fan, although with the heat extracted the chimney effect might not work so well? Really cool! Didn't realize the solder would hold. Some of the elbows look to be right next to the coals! Is this hooked to a cold water supply? Looks like you have lots of boiler plumbing parts. Wonder what temps you are getting? 2" exhaust pipe! Sweet! You hangglide? You know the story of Father Yod and the Source Family hanggliding in Hawaii? Google it and YaHoWaHo!

  • @apples13able Solder melts at 260c, with water being pumped through it to a rad it never exceeds 80c. Its a sealed system, no cold water main needed. The tube near fuelbed is an air supply for combustion. Im a gas engineer so I get lots of boilers to scrap. Yes Ive been flying since 1979, I'll checkout that story you sent me, thanks.

  • I WAS THINKING ( IMAGINE THAT!) WHAT IF I HAD A REGULAR OLD WOOD STOVE BUT I PUT SENT THE SMOKE THROUGH METAL TUBES, INTO A FILTER MEDIA USING A BLOWER AND THEN BURNED THE SMOKE IN AN ELECTRIC GENERATOR. WOULDN'T I THEN BE ABLE TO KEEP THE STOVE I THAT I ALREDY HAVE INSIDE THE HOUSE FOR HEATING AND THEN USE THE EXAHUST TO RUN THE LIGHTS? IT WOULD BE NICE NOT TO HAVE TO CUT ALL THOSE LITTLE BLOCKS OF WOOD AND HAVE THE HEATER OUTDOORS AND HAVE TO GO OUTSIDE ALL NIGHT OR BUILD A SPECIAL BOX

  • @bryncomeaux Sounds like something worth investigating. Good luck with project.

  • my favorite part is where you don't explain anything about the stove or how it is "high efficiency".

  • @kenfo0 I explain it in the description, 2kw of energy is taken from the flue and sent to a radiator, this would otherwise be wasted in a conventional flue.

I was rather hoping my veiwers could read.

  • the only problem with your idea bryncomeaux is that wood gas that comes off a fire is already too far burnt to be explosive in an engine. To make that you would have to add a sealed fire box above the fire to char the wood in an oxygen free environment look up wood gasification. Your best bet for power off the wood that you are burning is too look up constant loop boilers apply the design as ya can to your fireplace for boiler heat, and run the alternator for your 110 off a steam turbine.

  • Check out my video on how to fix a combi boiler :) Moved over to log burner for central heating and hot water. Mine is Franko Belge Lorraine model 13kw

  • @AMD1 Yes the fan is sucking up the flue gases so the wood tar does build up on impeller and heat ex as it would on the inside of a conventional flue. The speed of buildup is directly related to the quality and dryness of the fuel.

  • hello, you have an interesting heater. I read you description and noticed you mentioned de-gunking the blower. I was wondering what you mean by gunk? I imagine it's creosote buildup, which leads to another question. with a heat exchanger around the flu, do you notice any excessive creosote buildup?
