@rr7firefly This is without a doubt my favorite BB rendition. She always picked great songs to sing; here an Arlen-Capote gem.
She does not engage in overemoting, which mars so much of her early work (well, for the most part). The ending is sublime, with her almost whispering, echoed by the strings.
And don't forget Peter Matz, her brilliant arranger for her first two albums. This cut is typical of him: he fits the arrangement to the song. Can't imagine her singing without him.
The transition from the guitar-backed intro to the strings section with vibes and tinkling piano keys -- so reminiscent of the 60's. Wonderful mix of smokey cocktail bars and studio orchestra. And of course Barbra's delivery: the way she utters "Go fill your loving cup!" with disdain -- she was always full of dramatic nuance, wasn't she?
I have had a copy of this LP since it was first released and never NEVER tire of it.
