Drum cover of Ringo's drum solo in The End by The Beatles from the Abbey Road album of 1969.

From The Complete Beatles Recording Sessions chronicled by Mark Lewisohn:
For the first time the drum tracks were recorded on 2 tracks in "true stereo" as opposed to the usual 1 mono track as have all other recordings. This initially was not a drum solo, there were other instruments alongside Ringo's drumming but were later removed to make it a solo. (The Complete Beatles Recording Sessions - log: Weds Jul 23 1969)

Geoff Emerick's excellent book on recording The Beatles titled: Here, There, and Everywhere, states that Paul (1st) George (2nd) & John (3rd) are trading off on the guitar solo section, in that very order.
It's 18 bars of guitar solo: the first two bars are played by McCartney, the second two by Harrison, and the third two by Lennon, then the sequence repeats. Each has a distinctive style reflecting their personalities: McCartney's playing included string bends; Harrison's was melodic with slides yet technically advanced and Lennon's was rhythmic, stinging and had the heaviest distortion.

Triggering Native Instruments' Abbey Road 60s drums.

Note: the hi-hat would not trigger at times during the guitar solos as Abbey Road 60s drums have very poor hi-hat response. After I uploaded this I noticed the audio sounds a tad funny, a swirling, mp3 type of sound that the crash cymbal is producing, yet another mark against Abbey Road 60s Drums software.

I used a drum chart from the drumstheword, Robert Litten's YT channel:

Rob is a very gifted drum set teacher. Not all who play can teach and Rob can do both.

Many of you ask where to get drum charts of songs I've covered, well I would recommend checking out Rob's channel for that and other tutorials along with their charts:

  • thats one of the best electric kits ive seen!

  • @Kiln99 Right! (in a Brit accent) :D Thanks for the dialogue.

  • @rhythmantic Ok Rhythmantic,it's only a theory of mine and a bit of fun.McCartney was known for his late night solo overdub sessions at the end of The Beatles career you know. That's all i'm saying ;-)

  • @Kiln99 Ringo is the drummer on this song as the playing and the log books attest to.

  • @rhythmantic Maybe your right, tho i'm not so sure. It's not so much the actual solo itself,it's the instrumental section afterwards.Something about the high-hat work is very un-Ringo,if you know what i mean lol?He did have,by his own admission,an avowed hatred of drum solos.Could that have been because he couldn't actually play them? Also,i think it's widely known that Paul was The Beatles by the time Abbey Road was recorded.Nobody else cared.Well, maybe George too....begrudgingly lol

  • @Kiln99 Thanks. No controversy there, as Ringo's on the drums for this track according to the Abbey Rd log books (see the description of this video). Paul is an adequate drummer, but he doesn't attack the drums like what's on here. I heard the USSR isolated drum tracks and deleted them from the rest of the tracks for my cover of that song. Why do you think Paul's drumming may sound like Ringo's, could it be he was influenced by Ringo after so many years of playing alongside his groove?!

  • Great drumming pal.You really nail it.

A maybe controversial opinion of mine is this;I dont believe it's Ringo playing that drum solo.I think it's Paul.I listen to the tracks that Paul played drums on the White Album(USSR,Prudence and others).and i'm struck by how similar in style they are. You're a drummer dude you should check it out

  • Wow! Thumbs up! :)
