New research shows Africans and people of African descent could be up to 40 percent more likely to get HIV, the virus that causes AIDS, than people of other races. The study marks the first discovery of a genetic risk factor for HIV. More from VOA's Carol Pearson.
yes, it is possible that race may be a factor because genetics that cause one to produce the 2 proteins that determine a positive result on the hiv test can be limited to a race variation. but the more likely causes for a positive result on the hiv test are conditions like tuberculosis, malaria and extreme malnutrition, all conditions that cause the body to produce the 2 proteins looked for on the hiv test. also drug use and pregnancy cause false positives.
