Paul Pierce led the Celtics with 22 points but missed a desperate three-pointer at the buzzer as the Grizzlies survived on the road with a 90-87 win over the Celtics Wednesday night at TD Garden. The loss dropped the Celtics to 50-20, a full game behind the Bulls in the Eastern Conference. Rajon Rondo also missed a runner in the lane with 20 seconds remaining that would have given the Celtics the lead and Glen Davis missed a desperate three-point attempt with 10 seconds remaining as the Celtics had several chances to tie or take the lead in the final 30 seconds.
The game marked the return of Tony Allen and Leon Powe to Boston and both had their moments. Powe was the leading scorer at halftime with nine points and finished with 13, tied with Zach Randolph for high scorer on Memphis. Allen, who celebrated on the court after Pierce's three-pointer missed the mark, finished with eight points. The Grizzlies jumped out to a 10-point lead midway through the second quarter as the Celtics struggled to find their shooting range. The Celtics were also very sloppy on the night, committing 20 turnovers.
The Celtics closed the first half on a 19-8 run to take a 45-44 halftime lead. The Grizzlies then took command again with a 10-4 run to open the third, only to have the C's respond with 3s from Allen and Pierce, who was huge in the second half. After missing all three field goal attempts in the first half, he made his first six from the field in the second half, scoring 12 of his game-high 22 points in the third quarter.
The Celtics are off Thursday before hosting the Bobcats at TD Garden on Friday night.
