Paris Air Show
In mid-June, Sen. Daniel Inouye (D., Hawaii) led a group of a half-dozen senators and their spouses on a four-day trip to France for the biennial Paris Air Show. An itinerary for the event shows that lawmakers flew on the Air Force's version of the Boeing 737, which costs $5,700 an hour to operate. They stayed at the Intercontinental Paris Le Grand Hotel, which advertises rooms from $460 a night.

The lawmakers were invited to a dinner party at the U.S. Embassy and had cocktails at a private party at the Eiffel Tower. Mr. Inouye attended a dinner sponsored by the Aerospace Industries Association, a U.S. trade group. Another senator on the trip, Alabama Republican Sen. Richard Shelby, took a cruise on the River Seine with defense-industry executives and elected officials from Alabama, Mississippi and Florida.

Mr. Inouye and Mr. Shelby declined to comment.

Last week, Rep. Walter Jones (R., N.C.) introduced legislation that would require lawmakers to disclose the costs of their military air travel unless they are visiting U.S. troops. The bill so far has one co-sponsor, Rep. Ron Paul (R., Texas).

"Both parties keep saying that we need to be honest with the taxpayers and let them know how the money is being spent," Mr. Jones said in an interview.

In February, Rep. Ike Skelton (D., Mo.) and 10 other lawmakers reported that their four-day trip to Hawaii, Guam, Japan and South Korea cost taxpayers $465 a person.

  • 13 million dollars pales to insignificance compared to the money wasted on the war. Nor is going on a trip high on my list of moral atrocities (and we can very much doubt that an experienced senator like Inouye took a trip like this that was actually illegal)...unlike approving torture, creating unnecessary fear for millions, undermining foreign governments.. It is disgusting that FOX is misguiding Americans like this.

  • Gee. It may be "insignificant" to a lefty like yourself, but the wasteful spending by politicians spends more of hardworking Americans than that of defense.

I guess you missed the reports by FOX about how much money the democratic congress approved for the wars.

But like a typical lefty, those details are left out.

"moral atrocities"? You mean like telling Americans that "WE MUST past this "porkulus" bill to "create" jobs for we are in a crisis!"

Now it's cap and TAX before us.
