Dad tells one story here of many on Christmas Eve 1999 from his Army days during the Korean War era after receiving his Army-issue sidearm back after over 40 years (Colt 1911A1 .45 acp). The stories poured out as he held and got reacquainted with a weapon he never had to use, but it meant so much. Mom made him sell this gun when I was born in 1958...I found it in one phone call in Nov 1999. A very long story, but it sure felt good to give Dad back something that symbolized a meaningful part of his life after he had given so much to my life. Dad passed on Dec 17, 2002. I salute him, too.

  • This type of oral history is essential to family life as this story wouldn't have documented anywhere else. I'm sure your Dad appreciated you tracking down this particular gift for him. A nice gesture on your part. Well done. It's a shame that too many people will get hung up on the fact that the gift was a gun and won't concentrate on what the gift means to him.

  • Thanks for the nice comments and more importantly, for getting the purpose of returning him a meaningful piece of his history. He never saw combat or had to use that firearm as a weapon, but it symbolizes a real important part of his young life in his 20s. This was a very powerful evening for my Dad and me, as well as for my wife and kids who were there. Just curious, how did you stumble across this video clip? Thanks.

  • I did something simular for my Mothers' Boyfriend who is an old WWII British commando in the Royal Navey with no Family and had 4 or so ships torpedo'd out from under him.. I went out and found almost all the plastic models of British WWII Royal Navey ships and built them all for him and even making wooden ores out of toothpicks for the life boats.. He as reall happy about that.. It's good we honor veterans wether they're family or not..

  • very cool.

  • Your dad must be very happy ro recieve a 1911. A sidearm that kept by his side for many years. When you see him tell him Staff Sergeant McCullough salutes him. Semper Fi

  • This was an awesome video. Thanks for sharing it!!

  • I had actually done a search on "Dad's Army", looking for clips of the classic British sitcom and your clip came up. Liked the sound of the description and decided to take a look...
