Marchers brought coffins to Cadman Plaza Park in Downtown Brooklyn and marched over the Brooklyn Bridge on Saturday to bring attention to the unacceptable level of gun violence in the city. The "Ride. March. Rally." started out in Brownsville where Zurana Horton, a mother of 12, was recently shot and killed as she shielded children from a hail of bullets.
A mother of 13 was shot in Brownsville on Friday by a rooftop gunman who fired into a crowd around 2:30 p.m., when children were getting out of school. Zurana Horton, 34, was struck in the chest and face while trying to shield children from gunfire and died at the scene, the AP reports. Two others, including an 11-year-old girl, were wounded. The crime has cast a spotlight on gun violence in central Brooklyn, which continues to plague some communities even while crime in the city remains at historic lows.
