Almost the same as last week's video - but this time it's past perfect continuous instead of present perfect continuous.

past perfect continuous = past perfect progressive

  • @Peppi94 Yes, that's right - it's not a lesson, it's just a series of examples. Thanks for stopping by. I hope you can find what you're looking for :)

  • This isn't a lesson; you're just giving examples of the tense. Where's the explanation? How's the student supposed to understand why you're using this tense? Besides, you're not giving complete examples. "She'd been reading the paper all day, when her husband finally came home." would at least give a clearer sense of the past perfect continuous.

  • Hi Sara, I thought I'd reply with my beginner version of "HOW LONG does it take?"...

  • Example:

Why were your eyes so red yesterday? Because I had been watching this video for hours.

  • That was an awsome explanation

  • Thanks for the info :) I will check it out!!

  • Check out JenniferESL's video "Advanced English 3a - Grammar - Olympic Games". Exactly 5 minutes into the video there's an example of using past perfect.

  • Conditionals and reported speech are 2 examples where past perfect tenses are used a lot.

In my mind No.2 doesn't make much sense on its own. I would put it in some context like I tried in my previous post.

But as I wrote before I'm a bit confused myself :/

  • I have big trouble with Past Perfect Continuous. I've never used it before...I just can't tell the difference between past progressive form and past perfect progressive form. It really makes me confused everytime I see the past perfect progressive sentenses.

No.1 I was watching this video.

No.2 I had been watching this video.

No.3 I've been watching this video.

What kind of situation makes me say No.2 ?

  • I'm confused. Wasn't past perfect progressive supposed to be used for actions that were in the past?

for example: He had already been working for 2 hours when we arrived.

From the vid it seems like all the actions are still in progress, if so wouldn't present perfect progressive be more suitable in those situations?
