David Attenborough reveals how birds have become expert communicators and use extraordinary patterns of colour and beautiful songs to deter predators, intimidate rivals and even impress potential mates. In Patagonia, he enters into a morse code conversation with one of the worlds largest woodpeckers. While the lyrebird of southern Australia has its own comprehensive selection of musical notes, but it also steals sounds from its environment and incorporates them into its own repertoire.

  • How do they get so close to birds like that? There's no way they use those bulky cameras that you normally see. Either that or they just zoom really really far... Rather than actually getting close.

  • The lyrebird just blows me away. Amazing!

  • Sir Attenborough is my inspiration. After watching his documentaries about birds I started research in avian ecology....

  • Nice show about bird communication. There are sure an abunadance of passerines this time. It is the largest group of birds. Many members are song birds. It is impresive how they can sing, and have the intelligence to put together songs. IMO the most impressive is the superb lyre bird. It is excellent at imitating calls and other sounds. It can even do seemingly difficult ones like the sounds of a camera and chainsaw. Talk about saving the best for last.
