  • Heard the 430 now is a discontnued.

  • @pf126p It would be possible to create some additional aerodynamics to counter that, right? For example, you could imagine flaps or ailerons on the gear sponsons to counter retreating blade stall and add lift accordingly.

Sure, it will probably not get you up to Mach 1 (the blades would probably snap!) but it might add considerable speed.

  • @wingsnbcusa It's actually an Airwolf stretched by 46 centimeters and with new engines!

  • Those Bell 430 will be stop product in 2010..... So I hope Bell Company come up with new design helicopter with retractable gear..... or not. But I would like to have Bell to have new helicopter with retractable wheel gear.

  • I take it you are a Plane pilot, because the reason of why heli's have a speed limit is covered with in the first day of helicopter flight training. That is if not with in the first day of class room indoc; under physics of flight. lol....

    ..X..

  • I love my 430... I hope bell re-continues production of them in the future... I hate to have the last of its kind. I hope the BA609 stays fairly close to the deposit price, as its next on my target.

    ..X..

  • Too bad we stoped production......

  • You know i was joking right? Thanks for the info though. Im a pilot but i never knew that, i actually never looked into why heli's cant go at very high speeds.

  • It couldn't even approach 300 for what's called "retreating blade stall," meaning that since you are moving forward and the retreating backward, as those speeds approach each other, you lose lift on that rotor (and gain on the advancing rotor) and you start to roll. That's why, conceptually, turbojet thrusters just wouldn't work on a helicopter. Not outside of Hollywood anyway. ;)

  • They're meant to be functional. Actually, wheels are kind of silly on a helicopter.
