Chapter Fifteen

Josh wasn't really in a party mood, he didn't even know Fagin. Miley and Demi carried in a cake and ice cream. The girls got the food ready, Joe and Chris were no where to be seen and Josh sat with Nick on the beds observing the scene in front of them. For a moment they all seemed happy, smiling as they passed the plates and stuck the candles into the white frosting. Across the cake in red letters Happy Birthday Mark.

Josh looked at Nick, questioning the cake.

Josh: Who's Mark?

Nick: Fagin.

Josh: Why do you call him Fagin?

Selena: Nick gave him that nick name.

She butted in handing them each a plate for when they cut the cake.

Josh: Why?

Selena: Well he's the book worm.

Nick: Like from Oliver Twist.

Josh: Oh! I thought I recognized the name. I saw that movie with my brother at our grandparents.

The idea of his brother silenced him.

Demi: I'll go get Fagin.

She smiled and walked to his room tapping on the door. A moment later the door opened and Chris slipped out, he looked sad, but as soon as he saw Josh he smiled and picked up pace.

Chris: Hey. Was everything okay?

Josh: Yeah. Are you okay?

Chris looked at the floor and shrugged.

Chris: Don't worry about me. I'm starving! The cake looks great.

Joe and Fagin materialized from the room. It was odd seeing him any place but behind his desk, he had a bit of a limp and a belly that stuck out over his pants, and pressed against his button down shirt. His salt and pepper hair was tied into a ponytail down his back. He smiled and sat in the arm chair.

Fagin: It looks great! You didn't have to do this for me.

Chris rolled his eyes, and Nick's hard expression still hadn't changed.

Miley: We wanted to.

She offered a fake smile, the others joining. Selena started the song and every one joined in. Fagin drew in a large breath and blew out the burning candles. The room applauded and then Miley cut into the cake, and Selena dished out the ice cream. Josh ate every single crumb on his plate, he hadn't tasted anything that sweet in months. After eating and small talk, Fagin finally returned to his hideaway and the girls cleaned up the mess. Chris was already laying down when Josh finally laid down. Chris immediately wrapped his arms around Josh and snuggled into him.

Chris: You need a bath.

Josh: do I stink?! Sorry.

Chris: It's okay, I'll show you the bathrooms in the morning.

Josh: I didn't see any.

Chris: There at the diner, Leo owns that place, just like he owns us.

That strange humor again.

Josh: I think I love you.

Chris: I think I love you too. Now get some sleep stinky.

They both laughed a little and fully let themselves fall into the bed. It was completely black when Josh had finally slipped out of the bed and crept to the window. The air was cool as it pushed against his skin. Nick already sat on the stairs waiting.

Nick: I wasn't sure you were going to come.

Josh: I'll do anything if it means getting Gattlin back.

Nick: I know and that's why we can't stay here.

Josh: What?

Nick: We want to help and you think this is just a stop, but it's not. It's like fly paper, once you land you get stuck.

Josh: I'm not... am I?

Nick: You like us don't you? You have Chris. Things are starting to get permanent.

That scared Josh because Nick had opened his eyes, he was getting stuck and he needed to hurry before he drowned in the sticky things that surrounded him.

Josh: What are we going to do?

Nick: Leave. I know something... Something I shouldn't.

Josh: What!?

Nick: I'll explain, but we have to get away from here.

I think I have fallen in love with your stories. There are a lot of writers out there that have a lot of stories going on at once, but not all of them are to the same standard. Yours are. They are all amazing and you should know how talented you are. I love this story and I can't wait for the next chapter!
