Kasha & Aaron (kashamusic.com), from the concert/discussion at Reuter Center on the UNCA campus, March 29th 2009. "Fireflies" is a piano/cello/voice original ( text and music copyright 2008-2009), a cross between the Judy Collins/Joshua Rifkin sort of "Wildflowers" era sensibility, and the "Romantic-era miniature" sort of art song. Parts of it are set, notated exactly on the page, and parts are somewhat improvisational within the tiny framework. It was composed in the course of Kasha teaching "Exploring Musical Composition" at Reuter Center in 2008.
Text:
The evening air is bright with breaking light the storms have left behind.
The thunder fades away.
The day is fading, fading down to fireflies, to fireflies.
And who can say where they might light, above the grass?
The future's not predictable based on the past.
And therein lies the essence of delight:
to look for that next blink of light.
And no one ever quite can say
the shape and color of the day,
and herein lies the true delight:
to never know just where the light
might shine.
