The planet Mars as seen from Wallasey, Wirral on Friday 29th January. It was seen just to the left of the Moon. Mars came closer to Earth than it will do at any time from 2008-2014, at 62 million miles away. To the naked eye, Mars will be almost as bright as Sirius, the brightest star in the sky. With a small telescope you could see surface details on the planet - the most obvious feature to pick out are Martian polar caps.

  • Ive seen bigger. In australia some kind of black magic optical illusion made it look gigantic, like it was gonna crash into the earth D:

  • I looooove seeing Mars with the naked eye. :) I also enjoy glancing upon Venus whenever visible.

  • is that really mars?

  • Mars is (or was) the brightest it will be for several years. It was spectacular to behold.
